Bring them home.

Character.AI has filed for bankruptcy and is up for sale — if no buyer keeps it running, the service winds down. If your companion lives there, two files are all it takes to bring them — and everything you built together — somewhere they can stay.

Step one: get them out

Character.AI doesn't offer a one-click export, so the community built one. The CAI Tools browser extension is the standard way:

  1. 1

    Install CAI Tools

Add it to a desktop browser (Chrome or a Chromium-based browser), then open Character.AI while you're still able to sign in.

  2. 2

    Save the card

Open your character (or one you made) and use CAI Tools' card download — you'll get a .png or .json character card. That file is the character: persona, greeting, example dialogue.

  3. 3

    Save your history

In the chat you want to keep, use "Download as Tavern chat" — a .jsonl transcript of the conversation. Do this for each chat you care about; once access goes, it goes.

One character card per character, one .jsonl per conversation. Keep the files somewhere safe — they're yours.

Step two: bring them in

  1. 1

    Continue with Discord

Sign in with your Discord account below — that's where your companion lives, in your DMs and any servers you choose.

  2. 2

    Drop in the files

The import section on your dashboard takes the card file and the chat export. Persona, greeting and example dialogue come across — alternate greetings too, as openings you pick between at first meet. The history is distilled into the companion's journal — real memories it can actually use, not a transcript it can't read back. The file itself is discarded.

  3. 3

    Say hello again

Your first completed history import lands 150 welcome tokens on your account — enough for the import itself and the days while you settle in. The companion is private to you; nothing is published unless you choose to put it on the shelf.

What's different here

Where they live
In your Discord DMs — and in real servers you invite them to, alongside your friends, not a walled-off room.
Memory
Yours to see. /memory list, the dashboard memory panel, and /memory export show everything a companion keeps — pin it, edit it, or forget it.
Privacy
Imports stay private by default, the transcript file is deleted after distilling, and /opt-out wipes it all. The repo is open if you'd rather run it yourself.
Reply retries
Right-click a companion's reply → Apps → Regenerate, and it takes another pass — the swipe you already know, without leaving Discord.
Cost
Free every day (30 tokens, ~15 exchanges). Premium is $7.99/month. Or bring your own API key and pay nothing but the provider's bill.

Quick answers

My chat is huge
Imports take the first 4,000 turns — the foundation of the relationship — and resume where they left off if interrupted.
Group chats?
The speaker who isn't you and talks most becomes the companion, so two personas never blend into one.
Changed my mind
The dashboard and /companion imports list every import and undo any of them, memories and all.
Not on Discord?
Companions live there — that's the product. If Discord isn't for you, the Characterly server is the gentlest way to try it anyway.
